Melancholy Bay: Images of English Bay, Burrard Inlet and Howe Sound from the Collection features works drawn from both the Gallery’s permanent collection and its archive; some of them are recent acquisitions and some have resided in the collection for a number of years. With the collision between a stunning physical environment of ocean and mountains and one of the busiest commercial seaports on the West Coast of North America, the tenor of this exhibition has been punctuated by the April 8, 2015 oil spill of bunker fuel into English Bay. This incident was an immediate wake-up call that emphasized the fragility of our environment and brought into question any supposition that such occurrences exist only in our imagination.
